React shows off iPhone Archon revival in motion
It's been nearly half a year since React Games last talked about their plans to update EA's classic board/strategy game Archon for the iPhone, but with the release now making its way through the App Store approval process, they're showing off video of the game for the first time.
The team said in May that they're using a mix of accelerometer and virtual d-pad controls for both board movement and combat screens, which will be what makes or breaks the game's long term appeal, but it shouldn't be much longer than a week at most before we find out for ourselves.

The fonts chosen for this version of "Archon" seem better suited for a Dora The Explorer game than a strategy game. And the reviews they have listed at the top of the App Store description seem to insinuate they are for the iPhone version, when they are in fact for the original game. Anyone reading in detail will catch this, but someone skimming the description will likely only catch "10 out of 10" and "9.7 out of 10." Unfortunate decisions on both parts.
I couldn't find any evidence that there's a "retro" version inside this game, allowing the player to experience the original version. Having access to that might change my mind.
I read back to an earlier Offworld post that suggests M.U.L.E. should be next. If these guys get their hands on M.U.L.E., I will cry for 1000 years. Better off dead than butchered.

Archon was an amazing game for the C64. React did a good job all-around in updating the look and feel. It may be cool to have an option to run the original graphics as well, but why not just run an emulator if you want that? Oh yeah, APPLE REJECTED THAT. VICE emulation runs at something like 5000x C64 speeds, depending on your system. You can find a zip file of the entire catalog of C64 games (2500+ titles) through IRC. Get a good old fashioned joystick & you're set.
