Restore your yellowed consoles with Retr0Brite

yellowsnes.jpgIf you're still a hanger-on to your retro consoles, the SNES in particular, chances are it looks a bit like the one on the right by now -- VintageComputing did a wonderful little article consulting a chemist on the exact reason why.

As I neglected to mention yesterday, but now you can see via this Mother Boing writeup, a DIY project has kickstarted a solution with the Retr0brite project, a set of instructions to concoct your own hydrogen peroxide formula to restore your plastic to its original purple-grey hue, with what appears to be great success.

When I read about this on Boing Boing yesterday, the SNES was the first thing that came to mind. It never happened to mine, since it probably never sat in direct sunlight, but I remember seeing a friend's whose had the yellowing, but only on some pieces.

Interesting.

I had an SNES that yellowed (got it used that way); a few years back, I disassembled the whole thing (the power jack broke, needed to solder on a new one) and, while I was at it, spraypainted-and-sealed it as close to the light-purple as I could find.

Additionally, Nintendo, I hate you and your security screws-- I had to find a GameBit to get it open nicely. Ugh.

Thanks for the shoutout, Brandon. Under the rush for all things RetrOBrite (which is indeed amazing), it's easy for my original article to get swept under the rug. :)
