Quake Live basically more or less live

First announced just over a year ago, developer Id and ad-partner IGA have officially opened the beta for their free-to-play web version of Id's standard-setting multiplayer arena shooter, Quake Live.
I would love to tell you how it plays and how its ad-based business plan has been integrated, but there are currently 35,000 more people in front of me also wanting to do the same thing.
Instead, then, let this be a post to say: better to get in line now than to hear about it later.

I was able to play the beta and I can tell you that on my machine, Quake Live just crawled. I got a smooth experience for the first 3 minutes and then smoke started to come out of my vents and I got a slide-show. Weird because I can run Doom3 gen games fine...
I'll have to check it out after the queue calms down.

I got accepted to the beta last weekend, so I was able to get a few games in before it opened up, and it easily plays as well as quake 3 arena, no lag or anything, and load times seem to be shorter on live. Granted I was using my gaming rig, but it was only a 2Mb line.
There are some nice features like localised matches and skill-matching, so you shouldn't get owned too easily.

I too have been doing the beta for about a month. It really is pretty good. It certainly helped having the skill matching. Now I don't get blown away every 2 seconds by some kid.

killdeer, same thing here, 9000 in queue, waited waited waited, id says 'SORRY MAC SUCKS!! YOU CANT PLAY'
imo browser based anythings should be designed to work on all browsers - across all operating systems

Blech. I really shouldn't have to wait in line to play a game. It's a poor design choice.
