Pixel porn: the brilliantly honest Yar's Revenge, Asteroids, Star Raiders ad

The most amazing thing about this Atari 2600 ad which purportedly ran in theaters in 1982 is that it doesn't try to upsell any of the action you'd end up getting at home: no 8x8 sprites turned magically into full-color cartoons or live-action heroes, it simply demonstrates and sexes up the gameplay in all its low-bit glory.

That, and it's sinister as hell.

Oh, I don't know, man... Hell's pretty sinister.

But that is cool. It doesn't quite make me want to play the games, but it definitely makes me a little more afraid of Atari and their insidious plans.

That has got to be one of the best classic video game ads ever!

Yar's Revenge was pretty much my favorite non-Activision, non-Imagic game for the Atari 2600. Don't know if I ever had the manual, so I liked hearing the little names he had for everything in this ad. :)

This gives me an idea:

Almost all vintage game remakes ruin the essence of the original in fairly predictable ways.*

I would love to see purist-remakes made,
that might look something like this:

-Sprites may be rendered in 3D,
but must be pixel-by-pixel recreations,
or at most no detail added
(e.g. Asteroids, in the above ad)
(e.g. Pacman sprites scanned from Femo models)

-New approaches must fit the feel of the original
(i.e Pitfall would make a great side-scroller,
Pacman would not)

-Any 'enhancement' of the game must be an option which the user can deactivate

-The sound is sacred. Do not adjust.

*If anyone wanted some examples of
crimes against history I was referring to:

-Making a 3D environment out of something
that was better in 2D.
(e.g. Lemmings, Frogger)

-Adding visuals that are aesthetically distracting/cluttery
(e.g. most Super Mario 123 remakes)

-Changing the gameplay / feel in sadly bewildering ways
(e.g. Interfering polar bears in Pong (Playstation 1 remake))
