Obama goes Gears of War

gridlock.jpg

On display in Miami at the Art Basel expedition, this painting by artist Daniel Ortiz features our President-Elect as a Gear of War, revving the buzzsaw on his Lancer and attempting to plunge it through the chest of the Republican Horde Leader as a Dick Cheny Brumak lumbers monstrously in the background.

Honestly, this painter is pretty inept — those are the least recognizable Palin, McCain and Biden caricatures I've ever laid eyes upon — but it's hard not to titter at the appropriation of Gears of Wars ongoing battle between macho cyber-armor beefcakes and a monstrous chthonic horde as a metaphor for the bipartisan rivalry of American politics.

i like how the locust dude obama is battling with has an arm coming out of his chest. And that Brumak feels a bit more Rumsfeld-mixed-with-Teddy-Roosevelt to me.

"pretty inept" huh? That's a pretty dick thing to say. I'm trying to think about how omitting that entire sentence would have made your post any worse, and I don't think it would have. It's not exactly easy to paint, yet it's so easy for so many to be a critic. It's a backhanded compliment you've paid to this artist by both promoting and insulting their work at the same time.
In my imaginary blog I'll post "Hey John Brownlee had a post about something cool that he saw, but he's a total dick." Taking my cues from you.

Hey Anonymous! I'm a painter and I disagree with you! First off, Brownlee is correct, the heads look pasted on and Palin looks like she got a face full of flour. Secondly, it is easier to critique than it is to paint, but there's just as many lousy painters as there are dumb critics. The point here is that the idea is good but the execution lacking. We call that constructive criticism. I take it your latest coffee shop show didn't sell anything?

Agree with #2 using inept to describe the artist makes the post feel like something that could have been posted on kotaku or joystiq. This is a boingboing site I expect more.

I hate to repeat myself, but in your case John I'll make a special exception.

Please look to Brandon's posts for guidance in content and form. His subject matter is fresh, interesting and entertaining. His writing is informative and succinct. Brandon highlights clever new beautiful things and introduces us to the people who made them.

So far you have introduced us to:

  • a drawing of mega man that may or may not have been made from menstrual blood
  • a homophobic christian organization
  • an old youtube video
  • political fan art that you apparently don't like
  • aimless diatribes on tired old subjects like microsoft and blast processing

You've got the potential to be interesting. Just let it flow, like a mega menstrual cycle. Titter onward to bigger, buffer beefcakes. Make us all proud by overcoming your pomposity.

Here is what happens when John talks about things he is rather ignorant about. The "Obama" painting is titled Gridlock and it's 6x12 feet.
Judgments based on a 2x4 inch low-res file, make no favors to the intelligence of the critics bashing on it.

If you would have informed yourself a little before rushing to libel, you would have noted that making one "titter" is a intentional function of the piece. So inept this painter is, that even a monkey like yourself got it
